Elders have always held great value in Native American culture. They contain tribal knowledge that cannot be found anywhere else. Traditionally, they are the ones who pass on this information to future generations through the practice of oral history. The elder shown in the picture is an instructor I had at a tribal college, whom everyone called “mvhayv” or teacher. She was very influential to me, as I know she is for everyone who has been or will be under her instruction.
